Benson Okot a student at Uganda Christian University emerged first in the recently completed 28th National Track and Field Trials held on 7 May at Namboole stadium.
Following his drop in trials from the team that represented Uganda in the 2017 Commonwealth games, Okot has returned with much valour.
He has finished first in 21.0 seconds which is a qualifying time for the Africa Senior Championships.
He was followed by Kenya’s Kamanga Tazana who completed the race in 21.3 seconds. Among other in the race was UCU’s Tarsis Orogo who finished 4th.
Okot says, “I have prepared with my coach Kabuye Timothy, having higher hopes of a better competition ever in my career.”
This year’s Africa Senior Championships in athletics will be held among 54 African countries in August from 1-7 in Asaba Nigeria.
The games are organised annually by the Uganda Athletics Federation to select a team of athletes to represent Uganda in the Africa Senior Championships.
Uganda has not had any athlete winning at the Championships since the games were established in 1979. The tournament has been dominated by teams from Kenya and South Africa respectively.
