Canons on a roll

Lady Canons extend winning streak as male counterparts faulter against KIU Titans in national league

BY AGATHA MUTEBI

The UCU Lady Canons have continued in their winning ways by beating KIU Rangers 57-48. The game was held on June 18 at YMCA, and it cements the Canons’ flawless action in the first four games of the season.

The Mukono-based team and league champions are not taking anything for granted in the National Basketball League this season.Although they started off slow with an 18-12 lead in the first quarter, led by shooting guard Judith Nansobya and Rachael Muwanguzi who had 3 and 5 points in the frame respectively, the side built up a steady momentum to the time buzzer to utilize every quarter to the best of their ability.

By half-time they were controlling the game with eight points ahead of their opponents. Later with five minutes left on the clock, the UCU side was in demolition mode (51-40) scoring 13 points and maintaining a good defence.

Muwanguzi led her side to a fourth victory, nailing a game high 16 points and four rebounds. Angella Zaina Lokwameri, Nansobya and Sarah Ageno added 11, 14 and 10 points respectively.

On the losing end, Fionah Apiyo and Ritah Komugisha scored 10 points a piece while Maureen Nankya and Maureen Aturinda added 8 and 10 rebounds each.

Meanwhile in the men’s category the UCU Canons have recently been greatly tested in the previous games. They are yet to recover from losing to Power  Pemba Warriors as they were again humiliated by the KIU Titans.

The now troubled Canons lost 55-43 and will be looking to recover their losses in the next game against the UPDF Tomahawks.

Fighting a losing battle, UCU’s Jonathan Egau scored nine points and five rebounds while Fahdili Chuma, Steven Wundi, Joas Maheta added seven and six, respectively.
