UCU Shepherds get new coach as Leonard Lubambula relinquishes role

BY FRED HIDULA

The UCU Rugby Shepherds now have a new tactician. He is  Denis Etuket who has taken over the mantle from Leonard Lubambula.

This follows Lubambula’s  appointment as director and headcoach of newly formed Walukuba Rugby Football Club.

“I will be mandated to   build a team capable of competing in the Eastern League and also nurture young players,” Lubambula said.

The two have been working closely including in the just concluded  East Africa University Games in Nairobi where they failed to win any medals in rugby despite travelling as defending champions.

Lubambula, who has also been the headcoach for the university woodball team, said that he was confident the team would improve since it has young players.

He said the young players included William Ngora, Conrad Wanyama, Gideon Kayihura, Denis Sekiwere, Ivan Magomu and Captain Terry Ochan who can fill the gap left by Anthony Kinene, former national coach for the men’s side. Kinene left for the US last year while Steven Wokorach  has joined the Kenyan top club and defending champions Kabrus Rugby Football Club.

“I am extremely confident that Etuket can carry on with the team after closely working with him for some time,” Lubambula said.

He explained that the team is currently preparing to resume the championship for Central Division, where they came second to Kyadondo tallions last season and missed out on the top flight premiership.

The top teams in each of the four regions West, East, North and Central will meet in a playoff before qualifying for the top flight.
