The Lady Cardinals opened their 2016/17 Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUBA) Women Elite League account with a vital 2-0 win against Buikwe She Red Stars on November 16 at Buikwe Stadium.
Substitutes Mable Kareji and new signing Elle Arnold scored for the Lady Cardinals.
The teams played to a first-half stalemate though it is coach Tonny Membe’s side that dominated possession, and missed close chances.
Membe introduced Kareji as the Lady Cardinals increased the tempo of the game in the second half.
Ten minutes into the half, this move paid off as Kareji dribbled past the hosts’ defence to strike a stunning shot past the goalkeeper.
American international, Elle doubled the lead five minutes later with another powerful strike from the edge of the area.
“I feel very happy to score on my debut and to help the team win”, Elle said.
Membe expressed the need to change tactics after a goalless first half.
“We had to bring on players who could make a difference and am glad they never disappointed the team”, he said.
The score line could have been bigger for the visitors had skipper Maureen Kinavudori converted her numerous chances in front of goal.
Buikwe She Red Star captain Gladys Nakito attributed their loss to an inexperienced side, given that most of their first team players were at school. She believes that they can do better in the return leg.
The Lady Cardinals missed the services of versatile midfielder and goalkeeper Joan Namusisi after sustaining a hand fracture during training a day prior to the game.
